Are you a caring, empathetic and energetic human services professional with a passion for working with children and youth? If so, consider working with Shift as a private Child and Youth Care Worker with children and families across HRM in a one on one mentoring program.


  • Provide safe, stimulating and therapeutic support both in the home and in the community
  • Provide care and supervision according to the needs of the individual
  • Provide support services as requested by the parent/guardian
  • Able to manage a variety of behavioural challenges
  • Have an understanding of trauma-informed practice and knowledge of how to implement those skills
  • Facilitate inclusion and act as a positive role model
  • Be punctual and reliable
  • Maintain communication with the Family and Team Support Coordinator


  • Energetic and outgoing with a high level of comfort working with children/youth
  • A great sense of humor and ability to manage stressful situations
  • Ability to work independently; a self-starter
  • Above average literacy skills, organization and attention to detail
  • Energy, enthusiasm and a genuine desire to improve the well-being of youth


  • Post-secondary diploma/degree in a human services related field
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience working with children and youth
  • Comprehensive professional experience in providing specialized child, youth and education-based services
  • Mandatory valid CPR, First Aid, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and ASIST
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted driver’s license & have daily access to a dependable and reliable vehicle
  • Must provide proof of $2 million liability insurance and a clear driver’s abstract
  • Valid and clear criminal reference check, vulnerable sector search and child abuse registry check

Hours of Work: Hours vary and will be subject to contract availability (evening and weekends are typical).
